Backcountry Skiing with Koren on

Red Mountain Pass.

One of the best things about moving to a new locale is having a whole new set of places to explore. On this day that meant a backcountry ski on Red Mountain Pass between Ouray and Silverton. We had been turned on to this area during a 3-day avalanche course and I took an immediate liking to the moderate slope and beautiful vistas.

Koren made beautiful turns and I made turns for a couple hours before we decided to call it a day. A quick ski back to the car and a 15 minute drive and the search was on for a good movie to go with our hot chochlate. It's not all bad living at 9,300 feet in the San Juans. :)

A shot of me leaving the trees. From here a wide open slope gains the top of a ridgeline which gives access to McMillian Peak and Red Mountain 3.

Koren making her way up the switchbacks on our first lap of the day...

Ari discovering that the tips of Koren's skis are not always visible under the snow...

Half way up on the first run...

Koren digging a snow pit with Ari supervising...

Ari tends to follow our tracks so he doesn't break through the top layer of snow.

This is a panoramic picture of Koren on top of the good skiing at Red Mountain Pass.

A slightly out of control Ari trying to catch up with Koren who just took off down the hill...

A shot of Ari with Red Mountain #3 and the peaks above Ouray in the background.

Looking west from where we started making turns...

Koren making fresh turns while Ari tries to keep up with her in the background...

Ari never really catches up on the way down though...

Looking up at all the tracks on this popular slope...
